The circuit lacks a switch for three modes with different frequencies. In any case, I made similar ones on a 555 timer.

1,2,3 are variable inductors

used for a change in impedance, yes, however they also change the circuit in other ways
where a simple potentiometer would not
For example: these can tune the frequencies of each of the 3 capacitors
thats the problem when circuits get passed around over the decades
people apply Fourier or Kirchoff loops and think their rendition is equivalent
well,.... That depends on what they were doing with the original circuit

This is a classic oscillator with a 180 degree phase shifter. Resistors and capacitors and nothing else. I do not deny that it will also work with inductances. But ...
p.s. If all three resistances were mechanically connected by a common shaft, then the frequency could be changed within small limits. But this is not shown in the diagram.

but for the application, analog signals are more suited for the human ear

very critical. Important to make note of these things
The important thing to understand about this circuit,
The 3 capacitors drive the harmonic of the resonator's frequency
which is also grounded on the back side
If i were to make this i would replace the 3 caps with coil capacitors
Throw the resistors away and use smaller tuning caps in parallel to each
of the coil capacitors. (these are just coupled 1:1 inductors, usually made from pancake bifilar pairs)
you aim for the proper inductance to resonate at the 3rd harmonic
then adding parallel capacitance can tune the frequency by increasing the impedance
you could drive the circuit consuming almost no power
most of the "work", in terms of electrical consumption,
would be done by the incoming signal

I got one the these probably 20 years ago. So last night I decided to dig out the Neurophone But I noticed that I was only getting sound out of one of the two transducers you attach to your head. Then I remembered that it seemed one side never did work. I checked the stereo output jack with regular headphones and it also came out of only one side - same problem. Then decided I would completely disassemble the unit to see if I could determine the problem.
Looking at the traces on the printed circuit board it looked like 2 of the stereo jack pins were shorted out by a PCB trace. I used a multimeter to verify two of the 3 pins were shorted together. You of course can't get stereo out of a jack when two of the 3 pins are shorted together. They were shorted together by a trace. This seemed to be a design defect in the PCB or it was intentional to keep the unit from working properly - I suspect the latter as some 3 letter government organization did not want Flanagan to sell these and at first refused even a patent on them as they believed it would enable ESP in people. I'm going to take a guess that the gov agency trying to stop this paid off the PCB manufacturer to intentionally short out that output jack just enough so it wouldn't work right but people could still hear something. I cut the trace and now I get sound out of both transducers (which have a stereo plug). It was a fat trace clearly printed that shorted out one side of the stereo jack until I cut it - not some sloppy PCB as everything else in this set and PCB looked very high quality. I know ... heavy on the conspiracy thoughts - LOL but lately a lot of conspiracy theories are becoming conspiracy realities.

Yes I see the newer ones can still be found although they look more cheaply made. As old as mine is the batteries in it still seem good and took a full charge. I think they are NiMh or possibly Nicad - I saw 600mah on them but didn't bother to see which type it is. Price for those plastic box units are more than double what I paid. This one has a nice solid brushed aluminum case and everything about it seemed top quality when I took it apart.
