for me it looks like a plates capasitor with a potential between two plates maybe because they made of different materials copper and aluminum (like very slow battery)
and between the plates instead of air or empty space there is a semiconductor material mixed with insulator (am i correct, why it is mixed).


also this thing reminds me of John Hutchison's battery as acceleration of electrons of the external filed as electron cascade effect. because crystals have a magnification effect on flow of electrons.
