In terms of preparedness, I luckily found a piece of broken 2X4 about 22" long, 2 7/8" wide at the wide end, and 1 3/4" thick.   Then I wrapped 2 layers of electrician's tape around the small end.   I was pleased that this made a perfect handle for what I call an "Irish American Shillelagh", since I am Irish on both sides of my family.

Since I was sharpening my tanto, I decided to 'test cut' (tameshigiri, tam-ee-shee-ghir-ee) the blade against the 'shillelagh'.   I could gouge 3/4" slices into the pine hardwood with a blade that wasn't finished with being sharpened.  (Seasoned pine has almost the same strength as human bone.)

Overall, I was happy with the results.
