ive read keeping the discharge in a vacuum    like stefan did in Fluoro tube...

either a busted neon lamp for the arc ??  placed in Mag s T coil or Slayer
and put into bifi cores by Tito drawn by Gyula
Another way is the use of relays for spark gap supplied by hv from flyback ?
 

Something more I was thinking about today with the bifi and secondary on a rod core. I remember the reason for the rod core instead of a closed core. The closed core would not help keep the sec field from impacting the primary. But in the Utkin pdf, he shows a secondary wound on the center peg of an Ecore(closed core) and the primary wound around the outside of the core. Thinking about it, this should be better than the rod core, as virtually all of the sec field will be locked in the core, within a power range of course.

So thinking on the Utkin version, when the primary produces field, the core as a whole is magnetized as if it were just say a rod core. But then the sec field would say for example produce a NS on the peg that it is wound on and the outer pegs SN. Dunno how all that mixes yet. But the primary would influence all 3 pegs NS NS NS, and the sec would want to do otherwise.

It all reminds me of that shell transformer where the guy had the sec wound on a toroid core, then he made a iron shell, like a big doughnut, cut like a bagel and the sec/toroid was put inside the shell. Then he wound a primary around the shell in a toroid fashion.  It was on of Teslas transformer patents. 

But the Utkin ecore version seems like an easier go, to get the same result.

Ill see what I can do.

Will have to try both pulsing the bifi primary and just ac in at its resonant freq.
