Yuk - that's nasty looking Nick! Start afresh with the IC sockets and use much thinner tinned copper interconnecting / hookup wire for all low current signal connections. Such as: -

You can cut down the supplied lengths as required.

   Ok, well, thanks guys. But, my main concern is finding a circuit that WORKS. One that does not require redoing, and redoing.
As we don't know which circuit really works to produce a self runner, neatness is not a priority, at this time. In any case there are no cold solder joint to blame, or bridges. 
   The circuit was partially working until I pulled it out to make some changes, and now it won't fire up.  But, I will get this working. Promise.

   Verpies, that is mag wire which is used for the traces, ends are cleaned and properly soldered, even though it may not look very nice, it does work. Everything tarnishes here in a matter of hours, so that's why it may look like it's old and "nasty", but, it's well soldered, and I'm using thicker gauge wire, for heavy duty handling.
   However, I do have a snare, somewhere. It could be the fets, or the TL494, which I'm looking into at this time, so I've ordered some new ones, just in case.
   I've also already ordered the new IC sockets and through hole drivers, etz...   But, the main thing now, is finding a circuit that WORKS,  for me.

Once you are properly equipped with the right components and interconnecting wire, you should find construction much easier. Working with a good quality soldering station and multi-core solder ( I use 0.5mm and 0.8mm for most work) will also make the build much easier and enjoyable. Once you become reasonably proficient, you will be able to either easily modify a board or knock-up different configurations on separate boards fairly quickly to find one that works best for you.
