You might find this circuit of interest!
I don't think it needs a spark gap/plug I think it's more to do with a phase shift as Wesley was talking about earlier.
The green coil could be a coil inside the grenade PVC sleave but many on the thread report excess heat a problem.
This was an originaly a Delamorto idea (thank he very much for that).

yes I did see it and got some really good test results, otherwise, the grenade has a flat wideband response.
