It woudl be interesting to think what you think BEMF is and where it comes from.  Below quote from Dollard's four quad book... although I think maybe it's not enough in itself to describe the effect.  Do you think that allowing a magnetic field to collapse causes a sudden reverse current?

That's correct. Snubbers just convert the unwanted spike energy into heat.  That heat represents an irreversible loss.
Lossless clamps return that spike energy back into the power supply.  ...that's why they are called "lossless".

  Ok, so my scope's second channel is not dead, just sick. I do get an image of the wave, but it's not the same as what it looks like on the first channel. The first channel seems to be ok.  My scope had been previously tested out and found ok, before I bought it,  but....
   So, TK is probably right and the probes and scope need to be calibrated, especially in order to get the second channel tuned in right. I'll be getting my new set of scope probes soon, so I may deal with it then. But, I would like to get started on that fix now.
  At least now I know that the second channel is working, when using my 100x probe, but not how it should be working.
