Above is a link to a lecture series by MIT's Walter Lewin.  This is the first video in a series of 36 on electricity and magnetism.  He discusses in detail why some of the filings poles switch and why some do not.  I am now on video # 4 but, I have a weak math background so the going is tough.  I think you, or anyone, will enjoy this guy.  He does experiments at the end of each lecture.  Great stuff.

Nacl will respond to heat rise by creating electrical charge.  I believe it is called a pyraelectric substance.
They actually heatup crystals to get Mev potentials to drive cold fusion experiments.

Scotty, in the first experiment when you make the rubber hot, then bring the salt near it, and finally move the salt away and watch them jump, you are inducing an electric charge on the salt.  It doesn't have to be salt, this will work with small piece of plastic, paper, even metal filing.  Charge an object up, bring that charged object next to something that is "neutral" and at first the neutral item will be attracted.  Once the neutral item gets close enough, or touches, it becomes the same charge as the object it touched.  If you pull the object away, the newly charged item will now repel.  You can make motors and ringers based on this principle.

You should investigate electrets, they aren't too hard to make and pretty neat.  They are basically the electric field version of a permanent magnet.

I think that electricity is nothing more then a vibration that is created by a flow of resistance. I also think that magnets are only vibrations with different seeking poles. Meaning one vibration flows in one direction and the other in the opposite. The magnets core would just act like a antenna which attracts the vibrations.
