Tesla's motor patent I can read and understand fairly well.  His coils, D in the patent however, I don't quite understand.  How are they connected?  If there was a side view to his motor it would be much clearer.  The reason I ask is that I am planning on building this just to further my understanding of his work, plus, it would be a good learning tool.  Are they just copper coils?  Could someone please explain.

Hi,

I think if we try understanding Tesla's only sentence on his coil D, we may find out what he meant. This sentence is:
" Let A B represent the poles of an alternating-current motor, of which C is the armature wound with coils D,  closed upon themselves, as is now the general practice in motors of this kind."   (I underscored what I mean.)

So if the words " closed upon themselves" means rotor coils that are short-circuited, do we get an answer? I think we do.  See this link: http://www.rose-hulman.edu/~moloney/AppComp/2001Entries/e03d/shadedpole.htm
Can we explain coil D as a kind of shaded pole rotor, a forerunner or variant of a squirrel cage rotor?  I think we can.
What do you think?

I think we can.  So these are just giant coils of copper wire connected in series.  It looks like the poles overlap the armature coils in his drawing.  Are the poles IN FRONT of the coils or are the coils just shaped really weird?  Isn't deciphering tesla's patents fun?

Hi Super God,
http://www.leedskalnin.com/
I guy on this website has already built one with video and pictures.  I bet he could help you!

Hi,

I have just seen the pictures and the video on Scott's resonant motor made out of the patent 464666.
It is interesting Scott has not used any coil on the rotor,  maybe either he modified the original setup a little or the coils D of the patent can be substitued by solid metals in which eddy currents can be induced?  But there can be a third modification: by using ferromagnetic rotor fingers, maybe the natural attraction is utilized up to TDC (when rotors just face stators) then electromagnets cancel attraction from stators' magnets and rotor can leave and approach next stator.

I think Scott is a member here as scotty1, maybe he is reading this thread too?  ;)
