What coil are we talking about here?

This is the Tesla 3 coil system developed at Colorado Springs.
Tesla also developed a bifilar coil.

When I  read that I read:

One can either get a high voltage by:

1) Driving a transformer that has a high turns ratio in the forward mode, OR
2) Switching current to an inductor that flies back.  This is what I interpret as his use of the term "loose".

An example of 1) is a capacitive discharge ignition.  An example of 2) is the far more common flyback ignition that dates back to Kettering, (still 11 years after the cited Tesla quote).
