In Russian forums  many newbies make no distinction between blocking generator  and качер, they are referred generators -  качер ...
I think, that  Kacher is a special operating mode of the transistor. This mode is located before starting the avalanche breakdown transistor. IMHO

So; turns out the first schematic is not the intent... although connecting a coil in such a configuration at the emitter to ground did reduce power and increase output

@Hoppy, more interesting, look no 50Hz on the scope and bulbs which flash about a bit - again without a smooth 50Hz.

Yes, like Kapanadze the grid supply is 'processed' into a complex waveform so as not to be accurately measured by DM's. Probably pulsed at low frequency with induced HV from the Kacher.

I hope the next fake is a lot harder to suss than this broomstick device.

Good point if you know the horizontal timebase setting on that scope.
Indeed, 50Hz is hard to filter out completely.  Only fully-blown power supplies can accomplish that.
