it would look like the transformer was just a power supply; but it's also a inductance, which most other replications have ommited in favor of a capacitance. (clip attached second)

The man who invented «Kacher» - V.I. Brovin,  can not answer the question – «that there Kacher»?
His definition of "Kacher" includes all the the blocking oscillators with feedback ...
In Russian forums  many newbies make no distinction between blocking generator  and Kacher, they are referred generators -  Kacher ...
I think, that  Kacher is a special operating mode of the transistor. This mode is located before starting the avalanche breakdown transistor. IMHO

@Hoppy, more interesting, look no 50Hz on the scope and bulbs which flash about a bit - again without a smooth 50Hz.
