Gravity IS a force. Without gravity there is no 'existing' potential energy directed to the centre of earth and no conversion 'potential <-> kinetic' can be made along with this vector. here's a link to a video. someone should be able to replicate it to find out if it is a hoax or not. but have not seen people in forums or on youtube replicate anything. not sure why.
any directional force has potential to be converted.
