Well, if I am the culprit let me give it some perspective taking an interesting example from life.  There are engineering "egg drop" competitions.  If there are no ground rules, you can go out and buy a giant roll of bubble wrap and put your egg in the center of the roll and claim victory.  But that's no fun and it's not a challenge.

Typically each team is given a box of materials, everybody gets the same stuff.  Beforehand they don't know what will be in the box.  Then you have to use your ingenuity to do the best design for the egg drop.  For college-level competitions, there are rules and constraints put on what you can do, it's all part of the fun.  You have a design goal, and a measurable metric or metrics - how high can you go, what is the maximum mass of your egg holder, and so on.  That makes it a challenge.

There is probably going to be another pulse motor build off.   If they wanted to make it more challenging, what are some possible challenges and possible metrics?

- highest rotor RPM, rotor must be at least 500 grams, rotor diameter must be at least 10 cm, no limit on input power
- highest ratio of battery charging power to input power, max input power 25 watts, no other limits
- highest rotor RPM, no limits except no spinning egg magnet designs permitted, it must have a mounted rotor
- highest rotor RPM, only limit is input power is limited to 5 watts
- highest mechanical output power, 100 watts maximum input, max weight of motor 5 kilograms

I literally could go on for a long time if I wanted to.  For me the simpler metrics of interest might be something like having three weight classes of pulse motor, and in each weight class the winner is the motor with the highest RPM to input power ratio, based on the sweet spot.  Also, you would have to produce a plot of RPM vs. input power, and on the same plot show the curve for (RPM/input power) and show where the sweet spot is.  The other biggie is the highest charging power to input power ratio, with say three power classes.

Now that's an interesting challenge:  Build a motor that must at least put out five watts of charging power, where you try your hardest to have the input power as low as possible.  It puts some interesting constraints on what you have to do, and almost forces you to think outside the box.  It's all about design goals and metrics, and not making false and meaningless comparisons between two different motor designs.

Another thing about this hypothetical stuff is that it would force you to learn how to make accurate average input power measurements, and average output power measurements.  In your clip part of the judging would be how effectively you explain and demonstrate this part of the process.

Anyway, I hope he comes back and you work with him on this interesting project.  I haven't seen anything as enigmatic as Tinman's measurements in a long time.

I referred you to Tinman's earlier CSR post only because I was unsure as to whether or not you had seen it.

It is very easy for posts to get buried in this rather noisey thread.

In no way was my intent to shove it in your face in the manner EMJ felt necessary to express.

I have a great deal of respect for many on this forum (and at OUR), yourself included.
