After reading I'm still a little confused of what exactly is The Aether.  Can someone please explain it in basic terms?  Seems to me its almost supernatural, am i correct on that?

Ether - the medium underlying all that is - the substance - the fabric.  Like air or water is a medium for sound.

Ether or Aether is believed by some to exist. It can be thought of as an all pervading fluid of unimaginable tenuity. It is held by ether theorists that everything including light and radio waves require a medium in order to propagate. In other words they conceive light and radio-waves to be of the same fundamental character as a sonic wave, in other words a pressure wave.
