Actually, you forgot 3 zeros   

But you make a good point---the countries that are lending us money definitely do not want to see us default on those loans.  If the US went "bankrupt" somehow, then many people would be out a lot of money.  In fact, it would be a major worldwide crisis, IMHO. 

EDIT:

I had originally posted a wikipedia link here, but it looks as if its reliability is in question.  Anyway, here's a link to a table giving General Government Gross Debt as a percentage GDP for seven major countries.  (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK and US).  Note that the five of these countries have a ratio higher than the US. 

So although I don't like the size of our public debt any more than you, we are nowhere near going "bankrupt".
