What is he feeding into the sloted copper foil ?
Just a square wave ?
Why is there at all an induction inside the iron nail
or drill rod ?

Not strange... disc capacitors pass AC .. no problem yes 1:1 or there abouts

This pair of videos i have uploaded and gave a rapishare link few pages before. I am going to agree with the darkseed here. Slotted copper "pipe" is transformer's primary which inductunce is way up boosted by ferrite rings. (the slot is for eddie current i guess)

The nail or drill or anything metallic in the hollow core is about a secondary winding. This little weird transfomer can work at quite high frequencies (Mhz) to light a bulb like this.

Regarding effciency... who knows. The man did not conneced the bulb directly to signal generator so as to have a baseline.
