a 30 foot brace made of alloy steel would expand 2.88 inches. that's a long way for a column to shift with 20 stories of building sitting on it.
the looads would increase on the braces the columns be able to support less weight as they go out of plumb. at some point the whole thing comes down. don't forget the load shift from the broken and damaged columns and that some of the bracing would have been damaged.  the planes also took out the sprinkler system and when the first building fell it took out the water mains.
as for doing it for insurance I'm so sure the pentagon did it for the insurance money.
if the WTC had not fallen do you really think they would not have to do so much in repairs that it would be cheaper to take it down and start again?

I recall no fire sprinklers, I was in the buildings during construction
100's of times [I believe it was never Finished ,still had unrented empty floors] Testing the concrete or steel Bar Joists [no beams just Bar joists]
like you find in a shopping mall ,Spandrel close density column perimeter
with bar joists flying all the way back to the elevator core,No beams anywhere else.
IMO you wouldn't need "shape " charges to bring this building down if you punched holes into the perimeter with  250,000.00 lb airplanes traveling at 500mph!
 
Huge [1 acre ]Floors ,No columns anywhere ,wide open it felt very unnatural.

This was not a Highrise steel Building [Very VERY Expensive],It was not a Highrise reinforced Concrete building [like you see EVERYWHERE today].

It was A huge detour from convention, A super light weight, super cheap Highrise,
With only passive fire protection [no sprinklers],Only dusty Monocote which blew right off the bar Joists ,leaving them bare during the Inferno. And will never be done this way again.
 
  I always felt [after seeing the basement in 93] that the building had been mortaly wounded.
And had to come down ,sounds crazy but??
   
    I spent 10 years  in the Demmo Biz In NYC I would see this knid of thing on a much smaller scale on a regular basis.
