Free Energy will change the World - Free Energy will stop Climate Change - Free Energy will give us hope
and we will not surrender until free energy will be enabled all over the world, to power planes, cars, ships and trains.
Free energy will help the poor to become independent of needing expensive fuels.
So all in all Free energy will bring far more peace to the world than any other invention has already brought to the world.

Do you think the American economy will ever improve?

Yes, definitely
Possibly, in the long run
No, it will worsen
Undecided

The united states and maybe the rest of the world will consider outer space as a serious place to go to only when they are nearly broke and need the money from mining the moon, mars, and the asteroid belt.
Only then will they "gamble" what little money is left to reap the metal and mineral wealth that awaits us.

I don't think so.  Look, there is a company started up with this mission already.

http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/2012/04/24/breaking-private-company-does-indeed-plan-to-mine-asteroids-and-i-think-they-can-do-it/#.UM52nG_tRzA

Anyway, regardless of whether their plan is feasible, it is simply a matter of economics.  When the cost of mining the asteroids is notably less than the profit to be had exploiting their minerals, then you will see asteroid mining.

triffid,
As a Shamanistic-oriented Native American, I have a bad feeling about Friday, the 21st, and it isn't total, instant destruction.

I feel something as bad a 9/11 but that also pisses of Americans as strongly as Pearl Harbor may occur.   As I mentioned in another post on this thread, the Mayans had a subsequent prediction to the day of ending on the 21st.   Thusly:

1) Half the people will eat well and the other half will have difficulty.
2) The population will come together and unite in a common cause.

What happens on Friday may be it.

I.    Hope.    I'm.    Wrong.

I'm merely a theoretical electronics engineer/technician for now, since I have no extra money for experimentation, but I was a professional electronics/computer technician in the past.
As a result, I have a lot of ideas, but no hard test results to back them up---for now.  That could change if I get a job locally in the Bay Area of California.
