Title: New forum software update done
Post by: hartiberlin on November 14, 2011, 04:18:44 PM
Hi All,
I have updated the forum software and the plugin to the latest versions.

Now we also have the much wanted image preview thumbnails, so that you will
see bigger uploaded pictures only as about 400x300 sized thumbnails and if you want to
see the full image, just click it.
If it is then still bigger than your screen size you can still click the arrows in the right lower
corner of the picture, then it will expand to the original size.

If you will find any errors please post here or send me an email.

Many thanks.

Regards, Stefan. ( forum admin)

P.S: Some more features are still coming and I still  ponder, whether to move the forum to
a WordPress / BuddyPress installion, cause there are much more possibilities with the right plugins...

@Stefan

Looks good.

I just wanted to know why the site is no longer Firefox friendly when posting.

Everything seems to work with IE but with Firefox there are some problems.

When posting a post.

- no "bold" or other buttons.
- "more attachments" does not work

wattsup

PS: At least the post button works. lol

@Stefan

I went on the SMF site and opened their forum post page and the buttons are there and the more attachments expands as it is supposed to. There must be a configuration issue with yours.

Here is an answer to a question I asked at the SMF Forum.

It would be good to get that fixed for all the Firefox users.

Looks good and is faster, but my preferred viewing page isn't working.
Does anyone know the new equivalent for http://www.overunity.com/index.php?update (http://www.overunity.com/index.php?update)

Only "Quick Reply" feature works properly for those who want to reply. The "Reply" button as well as the "Modify" option opens a page without the "Post" button, thus disabling to post or modify anything.

Thanks Gyula, I did see that under the Navigation links, but it had the
Recent Topics section both before and after the Updates. Now after a
couple of refreshes it's back to the way I like it with just the Updates block!  :)
Not sure who or how it was fixed but it's good!

Yes, there were still some settings not coirrect for the blocks, I just corrected this.

Just use from now on:

http://www.overunity.com/pages/update/

We have now also Search engine optimized URLs, so it is easier to see,
what the threads are about ! ;)

@stefan and all,
I use FireFox on this borrowed computer and I prefer how the system handles over IE.   I was rather put out that some of the text editing features were missing in this new version.   The smileys don't move on their own any more, for instance.   But at least it still runs with FireFox.

Stefan,

Still does not work when I press (more attachments).

I can't upgrade to Firefox 8, it will not run stable on my
operating system. So, I guess I have to accept that
problem and just upload one attachment at the time.

Not only that. No buttons like bold, quote, etc.

@stefan just open the firefox 8.0 like mine just updated and it does not work. Works OK with IE.

One member at SMF Forum said the pages are not "validated".
If you go here, http://validator.w3.org/
then open a post page and copy the url to the validator page and you will get the errors.

Anyways, I opened a post page and looked at the source file. In the image below is part of the source file where the attachment is too happen and where you can see the "break return"
in the file is in error as
. There should be no forward slash and this is probably the root cause of the errors. IE does not see these as problems but it is not real html and Firefox does not like it.

Since I can only post one attachment, I will attach a second image as next post showing now the buttons section of the source file. Again here the red forward slashes should not be there.

wattsup

Hahaha, as I post this I get the session time out with the image I wanted to post  now in the attached section. so the attach other file is now available again. So if you post only one attachment, then go back to modify the post fast enough, you can add a second image then go back again to modify and add a third image. Wow lot's of work but this is a work around the problem but not the solution.

@WI

Thanks for your post. I still think the forward slash is just there to mix things up and should be removed.

Also, in that link you have this mentioned,

QUOTE
Very few people actually use XHTML, however. You need to serve your content as application/xhtml+xml for it to be interpreted as XHTML, and that will not work in IE (it will also mean that any small error you make will prevent your page from being displayed, in browsers that do support XHTML). So, most of what looks like XHTML on the web is actually being served, and interpreted, as HTML. See Serving XHTML as text/html Considered Harmful for some more information.
QUOTE

In the post page source there is no content being served as "application/xhtml+xml".

So if this is correct and there is no "application/xhtml+xml", then the page is not xhtml but simple html and those forward slashes should be removed accordingly.

no problem. i see you are still confused. it is not to 'mix things up', it is to be xhtml compliant, which is done for various reasons. some were mentioned in the stackoverflow discussion...

wattsup
again, you aren't understanding... you are correct about there being no content served as "application/xhtml+xml" viewing the source shows us <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" /> (note the />)
and this is where i think you are getting confused because the document type is
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

so to validate it you have to use XHTML 1.0 Transitional and not HTML 3.2 or HTML 4.01 or HTML5 and yet we are 'serving' a content type of "text/html". not that this site validates at all... there are all sorts of unclosed tags
and numerous others all through the site. i sure hope stephan didn't pay money for it, it's very sloppy coding. i can imagine how much care is taken with security if the coders can't even be bothered to close a simple html tag to comply with the declared document type.

edited for further clarification. hope that helps. if you need further clarification i will try and answer any questions.

I think the XTHML errors have nothing to do with it.
I have in a few blocks only old style HTML codes, but the modern browsers
can still support this like
<center> and </center> which is not valid anymore in the XHTML specifications...

Well I think it is more related to some cookie and security settings in the new
SMF forum software version.

I now changed again some settings and will see, if these 2 pics will upload again.

<center> is deprecated and is no longer valid... but it still works. however, i wouldn't rely on it.  use style sheets, that is what they are for...

@Steffan,

Hello, I can not download images. Using firefox version 8.
look at the pinkfloyd image in the above posts,

I put my pointer on "1977-Pink Floyd.jpg (http://www.overunity.com/../../../../dlattach/attach/75123/)",
the link location is dispayed at: "http://www.overunity.com/11691/new-forum-software-update-done/dlattach/attach/75123/ (http://www.overunity.com/11691/new-forum-software-update-done/dlattach/attach/75123/)"
after clicking, the save box comes up and when I save, the file name saved is "3opd959F.part".
I noticed that I can rename the file to JPG. I can then see the image but the quality of the saved image is not as good on the web page.

Thank you.

Still does not work. I am sure the forward slashes are not OK.

OK, so I grabbed the source file. I did a find for all occurrences of " />" and replace these with ">". I used the simple find/replace feature and chose replace all. I then saved the file and opened it in my browser. I attach the file below so you can open it yourself and see the buttons are there and the "more attachments" works perfectly.

I know in OU research we should not be wasting our time on such frivolous questions, but, we do post here often and lots of guys use Firefox.

What browser do you use again and do you just mean the

 tags ?
Normally with XHTML compliant code these are now spelled:

to close the the br tag.

Does your browser not yet support XHTML ?

P.S: I can confirm, that the saving of attachments just scrambles the filename and has
an ending like xxxxxx.part
After renaming the file to e.g. picture.jpg
it works, but this manual work surely sucks..

So I just checked all the settings again and can´t find any wrong settings.
I have to ask in the SMF forums what error this could be.

Stay tuned.

I am using Firefox 8.0 which is the latest version and when I was using version 7.0 still had the same problem for so long, I do not remember but at least a year or more this problem has been here on Firefox.

I removed all occurrences of a space followed by /> and replaced it with >. All occurrences, not only the BR. I did it to all occurrences because anyways there is no real reason to use it.

The txt file is really a htm file that you can open on your computer to see that without the forward slash, the page works fine.

I think all you have to do is remove the space and forward slash from the master post page.

Having a few problems with the right click menu when posting, sometimes I have to use the edit feature or stay on the right hand side of the page,   only a little annoying,   other than that all is working well so far.

you are incorrect wattsup. there are numerous REAL reasons to use the slashes. number one being that is what the declared DOCTYPE is... XHTML

i appreciate you trying to help debug but spreading ignorance is not the solution. you apparently still don't comprehend the simple difference between content type and doctype. please do yourself a favor and educate yourself on those subjects BEFORE you start making arbitrary assumptions.  thank you.

It is a confirmed bug with FireFox 8 and SMF 2.01

I am still waiting for a final tested fix,
then I will apply it here.

See:

and:

Many thanks for your patience.

Until then you need to rename the downloaded attachments manually.

Repetitive strain injury  ;)

I am myself using the
flashblock
plugin for firefox, so you don´t see any flashmovies or flashbanners all the time,
only if you click the "f" flashbutton...

This helps.

Sorry it's no good it doesn't match the homepage for number of postings

You can also use:

http://www.overunity.com/pages/update/

for the latest 500 postings.

That should help.

Thanks for the fix, when it happens.

Regarding the http://www.overunity.com/pages/update/

can you put a link to that on the page top where you have the Home  Community, etc. We had a link called Forum with the previous version.

@stefan

The links above do not address the same issue, although I do know that when you try to save an image that is on the forum, the image name defaults to index.php, but that is not the problem we are talking about here.

It is specifically about not being able to add  more then one attachment and also not having the buttons validate on the post page.

Below is the W3C example for using br in XHTML2.

Notice no space between the <br and the />.
The usage is
.

Now I regrabbed the source file and only removed the space and everything works fine. So no need to remove the forward slash, JUST THE SPACE.

So if possible, please remove the spaces in the program and everyone will be happy campers.
I did a find and replace and counted 144 changes. W3C saw 163 errors so that's not bad.

Thanks again.

@stephan
the closing slashes are not the problem. wattsup is fully confused...
they are COMPLETELY VALID... don't go messing with them. if you are going to mess with anything, clean up the code so there aren't MISSING />'s all over the place. and clean up the orphaned start and end tags.

wattsup... this site ISN'T XHTML2  !!!  ::)  dude.  look at the DOCTYPE!!  XHTML 1.0 TRANSITIONAL
are you that clueless? can't just cherry pick specs from whatever family type suits your argument... you have to use the specification FOR THE DECLARED DOCTYPE!!  ::)
instead of not giving 2 furts about the xhtml, html,ml or whatever... LEARN WHAT THEY ARE FOR!!
http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml-media-types/#compatGuidelines
http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml-media-types/#a_example

perhaps you can explain why heairbear had ZERO problems with uploading and formatting using a vanilla FF8?

everyone? really? you tested this hack on ALL browser agents?
how about instead of removing the /'s why don't you take the static page you downloaded and fix all the errors so it validates under the declared doctype ( XHTML 1.0 ) and see if that doesn't fix your errors? instead of taking a chainsaw to already ugly code and moving it further from ever possibly validating...

Okay, the Firefox Download problem is solved now.

Now the attachments are stored correctly.
@Wattsup,
the multiple attachments also works okay, so it is only a problem at your end.
Maybe you don´t have the newest Java installed or any other FireFox Plugin or
Add-on is jamming it ?

Try to see here if you have the latest version of your addons:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/

Hope this helps.

Hello Stefan,

I noticed that when I type a post in 'bold' then it loses the double spacing I use between paragraphs.  Not while I'm typing but after I've posted it.

And that video of yours is set for 'on' every time we get to that home page.  If I hadn't been so irritated at this I would probably have watched it by now.  I sort of play a game at turning it off before he speaks  Mostly he wins.

Also - I can no longer see who of the users is on the same thread as I am.  That highlight function has gone.

I made a mistake with the quoting- not sure what I did  and saw a multiple 'nested' type references.  Which is nice if this is doable.  Haven't had a chance to test this out fully.

Thanks
Rosemary

Hello Harti,
I have lots of problems to access forum topics. In fact it is a fight to get to posting at all. Whenever I click on a forum link I get back to start page of overunity.com. Obviously many links only lead to the page "www.overunity.com" or "www.overunity.com/#new".

This applies to all kinds of links making it nearly impossible to write anything anymore:
- page number links
- "Go to last post"-link
- reply links
- subject links on the front page
- the links in the column "section" (where the subforum is listed like "mechanic", "gravity devices" etc." WORK, but selecting any topic afterwards results in switching back to the front page again

Just a while ago(20 min) and 2 days ago, when on the home page, if I selected a topic, it would just refresh the home page. No matter what I clicked, other than adds, as I didnt try them.

Hmm,
I have no problem right now...

Maybe it is a problem with the caching system used here.

I have to further look into it and will see, if I could disable the caching
and see how much slower then the forum will be...

Stay tuned.

I have probably the oldest FireFox here,
V2.0.0.20 For the 9x platform,
running on Win-ME embedded.

I have a few addons,
and few script entries,
but this site has never ran better.

I suspect they have addons blocking
scripting or redirects or something...

In fact, since you've updated,
the downoads now work fine too.

Hope this helps

Yes, it is a problem with the caching.
This occurrs sometimes, when the Database server is too slow.

Just reload the page then again .

I will move to a different hoster in January and then I hope these problems
will vanish.

Hi All,
I have now installed PortaMX 1.5 and also a patch to get this annoying File caching bug hopefully
fixed ...

Please report, if this will now work better...

I will be moving the domain to a new hoster after my vaccations.

Then also the server speed should increase again.

Regards, Stefan.

Well the caching did not work although I applied a bug fix for it,.,,

Must be my hoster not being too good...

I just disabled the File caching and maybe this will solve it ?

The server might now be a bit slower, but better than wrong links...

After my vaccations I will finally move it to a new server...
As this is pretty circtical task it really needs some big preparation time that I don´t have right now...

Regards, Stefan.

Stephan . It is working fine now that you disabled cache . Much much fast too. All the links are working and actually is the first time i have seen the attachment pic views go up one with a page refresh . Nice Work ,
And for those of you that feel Entitled and making threats ,ARE YOU PAYING ? Are you losing Money ? This Site is Provided Free of Charge so far and if there are issues accessing it and you don't like it  then go somewhere else .

one little gripe . I tried to message you again and got You have exceeded the limit of 5 personal messages per hour. :)

As intermittent as it's been I can't say for sure yet but I haven't noticed any problems since the file caching was disabled.  No slowness either.  I think it may be fixed but it may take a day or so to be sure.  Thanks for your efforts Stefan.
I take back what I said about slowness.  This I can't be certain of either as I'm not on my usual computer but it does some a bit slower to fully load pages - but that could be this computer.
