I was a teenager at the time, but I know what you mean.  "One Step Beyond" was rather similar.  All episodes were said to be based on actual events that were recreated publicly for TV.

The New Testament's "Book of Revelations" indicates that the earth will be destroyed by fire.  Some New Agers disagree.  I'm waiting for something to happen.  The way the economy is now, time's getting short.

People never learn.  Politicians run the country, but aren't any smarter than the average Joe on the street, so I think you're right, eventually.

They'll have to take responsibility for their actions, though.
