Stefan, a suggestion:

Go back to SMF 1.1.4 and get rid of the fancy gum-ball look. The forum will probably run 10 times faster with much fewer problems. As a minimum, lose the fancy graphics.

btw, the site isn't running that great right now. Some pages take 30 seconds or more to load, and some don't load at all unless you hit refresh.

Well,  SMF 1.1.4 is old and has security problems.
The actual version is 1.1.6 which I am running here.

To have my own server is the goal, but that would cost about 50 to100 US$ per month,
much more than the Servage account right now.
It must be in a good datacenter and I would need to take care of a lot more things like
security updates and other server maintenance stuff, which I right now
donÃ,´t have the time for.

Also I want to build up my Newman scooter,
which I did not yet have time for.

Well, the database is located now on a different SQL server, which seems
to be slower.
I guess I will change this again and try to upload the current database to the faster
one which I was before the downtime.

I have to ask Servage, what their fastest SQL is right now.

The one we are currently on is probably a bit overcrowded.

Has anyone of you got any experience with SMF 1.1.6 on SQLite ?

is a SQL less database solution using only one file, so
no database servers needed...

Die Umlaute scheinen noch nicht wieder ganz da zu sein. Dem Symptom nach sieht es so aus, als ob ein Teil der Daten in der Datenbank als CP1252 ("Windows-1252", Obermenge von ISO-8859-1) oder ISO-8859-15 kodiert abgelegt sind und nun als UTF-8 ausgelesen werden.

Whatever u do, come jan 1st 2009, you should be able to find a good host from Brazil. That way u got no spooks.

@ Stef, do not worry about cost of running this site on a fast server. Keep it simple. Let everyone view the sight at no cost. If you want to post, u must join 4 a fee, and that fee will be what ever amount you feel as thou will justify your post/ou hosting. Put up a link ( paypal would b good ), and i will donate.
