To use the gasifier designs as they currently are you will definitely need to chip the wood as this creates the partial blockage that acts as the oxygen restriction filter.

What you are suggesting heating the wood inside a sealed tube with an outside fire has pros and cons. It will be very simple to control the air in the tube by a ball valve and a check valve (non return) at the bottom, so not a problem there, however you have separated the fire and gas production processes.

So, while the wood inside the tube is not going to burn down so fast, it will just be gasified, the wood outside the tube to create the heat is going to burn down much faster due to unlimited availability of oxygen. So this way will probably be less efficient overall than the gasifier process.

However, you will be able to generate combustible gases this way just like in your lab experiment all those years ago. So for static application, like in your backyard running an electricity generator it may be a viable option for you if you are not concerned about the quantity of wood you will consume.

Not having a chipper is a problem that I share with you. I was contemplating a manual chipper that works on the principle of a guillotine with a stick feed for just the size of wood you have available. I do not think it is going to be very practical though, and nowhere near as efficient as a rotary powered chipper. It is after all only a slightly more controlled version of chopping with a hatchet, which would take forever in the quantities you will require.

It is early days with this technology for me so hopefully progress will be made in the future

I was also getting ready to come back and make the obvious statement that world financial markets have been tanking and are about to crater next if this downhill 'snowball' doesn't hit something solid on it's way to the bottom of the "Money Moumtain."

People are becoming more and more concerned---and where I am in this slum full of malcontents---they have little to lose but their lives if they think they'll starve in the future.  If the dollar/euro/franc/mark decline continues, it may happen.  To more than just the slum dwellers.

Europe is the key:  Italy, for example, owes various banks a trillion euros.  Spain is almost as bad off.  This is worse than the American stock market.
