Altrez says that an oscilloscope will work for this project but that it might be many hours of messing with the tuning while the function generator will give you immediate results.  Even though I already had an oscilloscope, I didn't want to mess around with the tuning aspect, so I jumped out there and got one of the function generators.  Mine was $125 plus $19 S&H.  It was a new unit.

Hey Slovenia,

Actually what I said was that an oscilloscope is a must have for this project. You need it to tune the Joule Thief and also to verify the output of your Function Generator. Here are three different scopes that will work.

You are doing well thank you for all the hard work you put into this project.

Hi Altrez,

Good to hear from you.  I know you said that an oscilloscope was a must have for the project, but I thought you also said that a function generator would make it much easier to tune the JT than an oscilloscope.  Did I misunderstand that?  Wow, I hope not because I didn't have $150 to throw away.

P.S.:  I already had an oscilloscope but I wanted to take all the guess work out of this project.  I want it to succeed very badly.

Slovenia

Hi Altrez,

I was just going by the two posts I have coped below.  If I misunderstood, I'll make the best of it.
Thanks for your willingness to help on this project!!!

Hi Superman,
You should have a variac, adjustable transformer.  They are fairly cheap on e-bay and come in really handy for our work.  I got an industrial one for $10 on e-bay.  You will need a scope to adjust your potentiometer to the desired frequencies.  I think you can do without the function generator.

Slovenia,
12v car / lantern battery
Variacs are great to have this is true.  However, I am going to show you a way to run this from a 12v car / lantern battery.
Convert to AC
We will convert to AC that can produce a clean sine wave at the correct frequency rage, then output that to our transducers.
Dedicated Circuit for Piezo
You need to remember that we are simply making a dedicated circuit for the piezo and not using the standardized one that comes with the transducer..
Function Generator
The function generator is done ready to go.  All you have to do is change the dial to the correct frequency select your wave form and output voltage.  Its a very simple way to tinker with the right frequency.   AND, I RECOMMEND that if you have the cash to pick one up for  prototyping.
No Guess Work

When you have it tuned in.  Then you produce the correct circuit.  It's so very easy to do.  Takes all the guess work out of the circuit.

We are going to use a battery.  The reason for the adjustable DC power supply is to really get the input power tuned in. Then we will run from the correct battery.
Frequency Generator
Think about it like this. We are building a frequency generator based on the information we have.  If you buy a Function generator then you can fine tune everything to your personal reaction chamber. Its the easy way to go and it will save you hours of hard work and headaches in the long run.  I encourage you to look up how one works then you will completely understand where I am coming from.

If you do not have scope you will have a very hard time understanding how all this is working. You can get one form eBay for $60 its pretty much a requirement.

Hi Altrez,

You mentioned that you are going to show us how to utilize a 12v car / lantern battery for our experiment in lieu of a variac.  Would you give us an idea where we can pick up this particular battery and what if anything else is needed to go with it such as but not limited to chargers?  Thanks!!

P.S.:  Also, does it matter what range of potentiometers we use with our joule thief circuit?  I want to get the one that will allow for the best fine tuning ability.   Thanks!!

Slovenia
